Ohio march 7th 1861
Father it is with pleasure that I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well at present and hope that these few lines may find you the same. we received your letter and was glad to hear that you was well James has had the soar throat but the doctor has pronounced him out of danger Mother took the soar throat on wednesday but she has only a slight attack She is up about the room we was very sorry to learn that you should have lost your mare but it can not be helped now. Mother says you must write when you sell your horses now dont forget to write. Messrs Brown, Cowgill and Hunt has visited up us as high as $3 times per day Matt and tommy is and Laura and Ella is well and hearty I have been out for 5 days give our best respects to granmother and all the family. Mother says for you to come home as soon as possible but not neglect your business. I must close I remain yours
