Julia A. Criswell to Martha A. Criswell, November 1862
Baltimore November 1862
Dear Sister
I thought I would try and answer your letter. we are all right well. aunt ellen is getting right smart. willie was down last night but he had to go away this morning. he is as fat as ever he dont grow much but he is the very image of pap. I have not heard any thing from tommy yet but I live in hopes of hearing from him some day or other. I cant believe that he is dead. well I will live in hopes if I die in despair. I want you to send me word when you heard any thing from rufus I wrote him a letter but he never answered it. give my love to all the family and keep a share for yourself. I got that likeness. I think it is tolerable. he will pass in a crowd with hard pushing. now dont get insulted at any thing I say. for it is no use. it has been a very pleasant fall we had some snow last week but it is all gone by this time. it was right deep I hope we will have / a pleasant cristmas. if tommy would only come home by that time I would be so glad I would hardly keep my shirt on. I do want to see him so bad often when the door bell rings I think it is him and my heart is in my throat and I am disappointed. aunt ellen and uncle daniel send their love to you all the folks in the country are well. uncle vincent was drafted and he got george criswell to go in his place. well I believe this is all I have to say at present write to me as soon as you get this letter and I will write a long one next time give my love to will lane. good bye no more
give my love to pap Your loving sister
