Camp Knox Merideon Hill March 9th 1862
Dear Daughter I received your leter of the 9th of Febuary I thought I would do by you as you did by me in waiting some time before I answerd you leter I received a leter from home dated March 2d they are all well I had herd of Mr Moores death by Lemuel your Mother rote me that Mr Stilphen was dead & Mr William Bener I had a leter from Kendel Bickford Friday the 6th One of our men was over to his Regiment they are encamp on Arlington Hights in Virginia they expect to moove soon they are under macin orders now I do not no when whe shall moove from here nor how long whe may stay here whe may stay here to guard the city Two of our Regiments of our Division went down to Washingto Thirsday last to escort General Lander remaines to the cars Our Agudent goes on to Boston with the bodey General Lander belongs in Mass He was wounded at the Battle of Edwards ferry some time ago wich has caused his death Wesley did not show much patriotism in runing a way from his Regiment they are not a patriotic race they are to selfish
this is a lovely morning here it is about like April weather in Maine the ground freesees a little nights the mud is not so deep as it was whe do not have so much stormy weather as whe did I can not rite you enny news about the war for I can not learn enny thing that I can rely on My health is verry good at presant I have quite an easy time since I have ben selected for one of the collor Guards I can not tell when I shall come home I dont expect that whe shall be paid of untill some time next month our pay was due the last day of Febuary the Government has got to pay of the troops on the other side of the Potomac before they pay of us I dont no how your Mother will get a long untill I get payed off Our Captain Kimble is at home on furlow for 30 days I have had a leter John Beedle & one from Josiah Higins of Chelsey I suppose you can go to Church to day I can not whe some times short address from our Chaplain the Regiment forms a hollow square & the chaplain stands in the senter I can not think of enny thing more to rite so I bid you good By
