Mrs. Conerro
Yours of the eight inst has arrived and finds the friends of your acquaintance in the 79th well so far as I know Your Mother wishes to know if Shelton was aware he was going to die and if he made any requests He was very delirious during nearly all of his sickness and I think was not conscious of his situation made no requests in regard to the family He talked much about his folks and would often immagine they were with him and he would / converse with them in his immagination He called Gabe very very many times but alas you was not there to answer He is now gone and we can but mourn his loss

You spoke of erecting a monument. Since receiving your letter I have been trying to think of something appropriate for an inscription I spoke to Capt Catterson about the matter and he seemed anxious we should get up something as expressive of the esteem in which he was held by the Company We have fixed one which you will find enclosed I am not altogether satisfied with it but will send it and you may use your pleasure about / using it If you think of something better of course be free to use it

Hoping to hear from you soon will close with respect
N. J Carter
Hosp. Steward
79th Ind. V.

P.S. Give my respects to your Mother and all enquiring friends if any there be and the same to your self
