Mrs. C.
Kind friend, yours of Oct. 29th came to hand in due time but at that time and since there has been but little chance for me to write We have been under marching orders for the last two weeks but we are not gone yet and now I believe it is decided that we will not go at all We are have been out on duty about five miles from camp for the last six days We had a good time of it only that it rained like blazes most all the time The bushwhackers gave us several calls while we were out there but the only damage done was one of the rebs getting shot. The election returns are just coming to us now They are glorious as far as heard from. The democrats in the army who voted for Little Mc look very demure over the result / but what is sorrow to them is joy to to the friends of Mr Lincoln. But thanks to their patriotism they are willing to give it up like men

The weather is very unsettled.

We are awaiting orders for something if we go we will have a jolly time of it plodding along through the mud but that is just what we are able to do. if you want to see mortar mixed just go to where an army has passed over a wet muddy road. There are a great many changes being made in this department Troops are being brought here from other portions of the army and a great many that were here are being mustered out.

The 47th Ind. came in here yesterday. They are now encamped about ¼ of a mile from our camp I saw your cousin Bob and had a short talk with him / this afternoon He is well and seems to be in good spirits. If we dont go away and they stay here too I expect we will see one another often. I have a cousin also in the 47th, so you may know I was glad when they came to this place

Well friend I expect you have began to think that I was not going to send you my photograph but at last I send it I dont know whether you will recognize in that likeness the well known schoolmate of former years but you will bear in mind the changes that has taken place since those days. I dont know how it will be with you but many who have seen me a little over two years ago could hardly believe it when they were shown my likeness I dont know why it is but I suppose it is not as good looking as they / think it should be. At all events the one I send you is almost as natural as life so you can or may know me by that if you should ever see me at any future time. Now friend I hope you will send yours in accordance to agreement and request

Well I have no more to write this time so I will close by hoping this may find you as well as it leaves me and that I will hear from you soon

For the present good by
George Campbell
