Camp Near Nashville
Tennisee December the 20 1862
Dear Sister I take my pen in hand inform you that I am well and hope those few lines will find you and the rest of the family in good health I received yours of the 12th and was very glad to hear from home I have wrote several letter in the last two weeks and I dont think you get all of them I have got money in three or four letters that you have sent and it comes in very good play for change cant bee got here every thing is very high you cant by a loaf of bread for less than fifteen cts and I have seen as high as twenty-five paid
I was very sory to hear that aunt Jane was sick we lost one of our mess mates day before yesterday Sargeant Edwar Thomas the Company was out on picket duty and he was well and hearty in the morning he went after water to get breakfast and when he come back he said he was gowing to bee sick in less than an hour he was past walking we took him to camp and he died in the eavening he was mutch lamented for he was a good Soldier we have a hard time of it we have to gow on picket one day and night out of every four an every fifth day after forage yesterday we went thirteen miles out and back I think that is gowing / a good ways to gather corn it looks very curious to see three thousand men start out with there guns and four pieces of artillery to gather twenty loads of corn the way we do wen come to a field of corn we form a line of batle a round it with the artillery on the highest grownd and then send the wagons in with a few men to load them Pery Brice come to the regiment last tuesday he brought the handkerchief that you sent but he lost the liniment I have gave up ever seen home a gain I some tim get home sick and out of heart we heared here that the rebels had offered to compromise it would bee the best thing that could bee done for the / the army is very mutch discouraged at the present time I sent Mother a pipe too weeks a gow by Pery Blyth and he was to leave it at Stouts grocery tell Israel to gow and get it Tete Eck come in to camp a few minutes a gow I must bring my leter to a close so
