William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 7 June 1863
Camp near Falmouth Va.
June 7th 1863
Dear Brother,
Yours of the 29th is now before me, and I will at once answer it lest I should not have time soon again to do so for we have now been under marching orders for three or four days, and twice have taken down tents, and packed up everything ready to move. The rebels have drew back from across the river out of sight. where they have gone to and what their object in so doing remains a mystery to us. Some / of our troops are now across the river, and are skirmishing with the few rebels who are left. And occasionaly we send them a shell but they make no reply. we will probably find out in a few days where they are. It may be that they have just drawn back over the hills a short distance in order to draw us on, but if such is the case I think they will be sorry for it for if we once get possession of the hights, I think we can hold them. But my opinion is that they have left, and I would'nt be surprised if in a few days we heard tell of them / trying to make another raid into Maryland. But we will know in a few more days. I have nothing more of interest to write. I was very sorry to hear of the death of our Uncle.
Health is generally very good. Henry & I are enjoying good health
Please write soon
And oblige
Your Brother
Harry
P.S. Excuse poor
writing for I have wrote
this in a hurry
