William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 14 July 1863
In the field,
Near Williamsport Md,
July 14th 1863.
Dear Brother,
Yours of the 24th inst came to hand some days since, but I have not had time to write sooner. The rebel army are all across the Potomac. They crossed at this place. The rear of his army crossed this morning. Our Army are tonight camped on this side, near Williamsport. You will see in the papers all about our movements, therefore I will say but little about them. We will probably cross / over into Dixie in a day or two (that is as soon as our pontoons come up) Our Army has been largely reinforced, and we now have a splendid Army. And I've no doubt but what we will follow "Lee" to Richmond. Our boys are all in fine spirits. We do not fear to meet the enemy at any point. I have saw an account of the rebel raid into Indiana by Morgan. I hope that him and all of his men will be captured.
I notice the "Peace Question" is being / discussed among the authorities at Washington and that "Seward", "Bates", and "Blair" are in favor of an amnesty, while "Stanton", "Welles", and "Chase" are opposed to it. It is strange to me that such men are of such different opinions. But such is the case. I hope they will fix up some plan to bring about peace.
But I think that our Army is very successful of late. It appears as though our army are a going at this rebellion with a vengeance. / And I hope ere long to be able to return home in peace.
July 15 1863
Early in the morning.
We are now getting ready to march. It is reported that we are going down the river on this side. I must close for the present. Henry & I are both in good health.
As ever your Brother
Harry
