William H. Speer to William Speer and Mary Speer, 26 July 1863
Warrenton Junction Va.
July 26th 1863

Dear Father & Mother;
                                    For the past six or seven days we have been deprived from any communication whatever. we have even had a newspaper for a week, until we came here yesterday evening, and the mail has'nt come up yet. Consequently we have'nt heard from home for quite a number of days.

            But the cars are a running here now, and we will probably get our mail today. We have done some pretty hard marching here of late and we do not think our task done yet. We will probably move again in a day or two.

I hav'nt much news to write. I learn that you have heard that I was trying to be Captain of a Negro Company and lest you might be uneasy I will tell you all about it. I understood that there was a call for men to officer a few Negro Regiments and that the officers got double pay, that ours do. And about six or seven weeks ago I sent a recommendation for myself as Capt. and Henry as First Lieut. to the Adjutant General at Washington. But as we have never received any answer from there, I sup- / pose that they never recd it. And this is the last of it. I do not think I will send again.

The boys are all in pretty good health. Everything is going on smoothly.

The seventh Ind would like to have a chance after old Morgan. But I think he and his men will get captured one of these days.

            I expect you are almost living on blackberries as they are ripe now. let me say that we have plenty of them here & to spare. I never saw as many in all my life. The weather is very warm. We had a hard rain last night

Please write often

            I remain as ever
                        Your Son
                                    Harry
