William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 6 June 1864
Co. "I" 7th Indiana Volunteers
June 6th 1864

Dear Brother
Yours of the 27th of last month came to hand a short time since, but I cannot send you but a few lines in answer for I am so tired and sleepy. We marched all night last night. I am now commanding the Company. Lieut Miller has'nt been with us but two days since the fight commenced. He says he is sick, perhaps he is & perhaps he is not. Capt Abrams, James L. Polk & Samuel Bair are all wounded & I am the next Sergt. therefore it falls to me to command the Company. / I hav'nt time to give you any particulars of our fighting, you no doubt read it all in the papers. Henry & I are both in good health.

Our veterans have arrived. Fighting is now going on in our front. I can hear cannonading & musketry.

But I think we will get to sleep tonight. I hope so anyhow for we hav'nt go a whole nights sleep for over a week.

Please write as often as you can.

Your Brother
Harry Speer
