William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, undated
Our boots & pants &c have not yet arrived but I suppose will soon. And I care not how soon for my shoes are nearly gone and I need boots very bad. I assure you I will glad to get them. We can do very well with one blanket (and that we have) for in traveling we have a pretty good load. I would like very much to be / at home and take Christmas with you but I suppose this is impossible. But I think ere long we will all have the privilege of going home. But I am not willing to lay down my musket until this Rebellion is put down and peace and harmony shall cover this land, as the waters cover the great deep /

We get plenty to eat. I weigh several pounds more now than I did when I left home. I have just been looking over my memorandum book and I find that I have not been sick a day this year. And for which I am truly thankful to Him that knoweth all things, for bestowing upon me such a blessing. /

I would like to be there and go a sleigh riding with some of the girls. But as I cannot, you must pitch in and have all the sport you can. I have not seen Ed Maguire for more than a week we left him & several others at Camp Elk Water and they have not caught up yet. So no more but write soon
