William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 13 February 1864
Culpeper Virginia
February 13th '64
Dear Brother,
Yours of the 5th inst came to hand last evening, and I will immediately answer you, so that I may hope to soon hear from you again. We were very glad to hear of our folks getting along so well; I hope this may find them still improving. Glad to learn that there are no more cases of small-pox in that neighborhood. I hope that the disease will spread no further. I would be glad to get a letter from home that would tell me when I opened it that "All is well". When I learn that you are all all well again, then I intend to try for a leave of absence. And I believe that I could get a furlough of 15 or 20 days almost any time now, under the present circumstances. But I will not try for one just at the present time. The stamps you sent for Perry arrived all right and I gave them to him. You spoke about / recieving what you suposed to be letters, until you opened them and found that it was merely a "Trappers Adventure" You said also you had a good idea who wrote them. I acknowledge that I know where they come from. You spoke about having them published in the "Clermont School paper" What kind of a paper is it; and how is it gotten up? Who is the Editor? &c Tell me all about it in your next And another thing I want you to tell me, and that is this: in the name S.W. Speer, what does the W stand for? or who is S. W. Speer? He writes to me and calls me brother but I do not know anybody by that name.
Wesley Williams and his son Joseph are out here at this time on a visit. They intend starting home next Monday. I suppose you have saw an account of our late reconnoisance. We were out two days. Our Regt was not in any fight while out this time.
Thomas J. Clark of our Company has been transferred to the Invalid Corps. Lieut Col. Banta's & Maj. Welch's wives arrived here yesterday. Quite a number of women are now visiting the Army. We are having very beautiful weather here now. I have just been out playing ball, and I am so nervous that I can scarcely write, but perhaps you can read the most of it. I have no important news to write. I hope this "Cruel War" will soon be over and friends permitted to meet again. Please write soon and often.
I have the honor to be
Very Respectfully
Your Brother
W H Speer
