Head Quarters 13th Army Corps
New Orleans La. January 25th 1864
General
I am directed by Maj. Genl Ord to make and enclose you the following copy of a communication just received at these Head Quarters, from the Major General Commanding.—
"Head Quarters, Department of
the Gulf.—New Orleans Jan. 23 1864
Major General E.O.C. Ord
Commg 13th Army Corps
New Orleans La
General.
It is quite probable that extended operations, different somewhat from those we have contemplated and which will be supported by largely increased forces, may be commenced under the direction of the Commander-in-Chief. If so, we shall hold Mat- / agorda Island with as small a force as may be consistent with safety. For this purpose, I hope you will adopt measures for fortifying the island, and put it in condition for defence against any force which the enemy may throw against (it?). The co-operation of the navy will be secured for this purpose, and if possable, a light-draft gunboat be obtained for the inland waters. Under present circumstances, it is not advisable to enter upon the mainland, with a view to permanent occupation, or in such a way as to expose our Forces to sudden or overwhelming attacks by the enemy. Major Houston has sent instructions in detail to Captain Baker, in regard to the preperation of defences, which will be adopted so far as they may receive the approval of the General commanding the troops at that point.
With much respect,
Your obedt Servant
