Franklin A. Gibson was born around 1843. He probably lived in central South Carolina. He enlisted in the Confederate army on August 15, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company A of the 15th South Carolina Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Overland Campaign, and the siege of Petersburg. He was wounded at Fredericksburg in December 1862, but he eventually recovered and rejoined the regiment. He eventually earned a promotion to corporal. He was killed in action near Petersburg, Virginia, on June 19, 1864.
