William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 27 January 1862
Monday night Jan 27th 1862

Dear Brother,
I will now try and write you a few lines in answer to a few lines that I recd from you. Last friday evening our Regiment or rather (the left wing of it) got marching orders and we went down and got on the cars about dark and run down as far as the South Branch of the Potomic About this time it commenced snowing and snowed very hard all night. Well when we arrived there, Capt. Waterman ordered out the scouts (of which I am a member) and we got off the cars and started out in seceshiondom, went about five miles, stoped at / a house, found no body at home. Broke open the door, went in, remained there about three hours, kept us a big fire. During these three hours, our Col. and and two or three Cavelry men went on about four miles further, and captured a secesh artilleryman, and brought him in. we then went back to the train, and went back to camp in the evening. We have had no fight lately, but I know not how soon we may. I must soon close. Tell Father that I have sent a time or two to Cumberland for my revolver, and somebody has taken it out, and if he has a reciept, to go to Indianapolis and see if the express Company is not responsible for it, and if so, make them pay for it, for it is lost.

Please write soon
