William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 29 June 1862
Office of Ast. Quartermaster
Hagerstown, Md. June 29th/62

Dear Brother,
Yours of the 20th of June has arrived and I must say I was glad to hear from home once more. I have nothing of very much importance to write, yet I will write something, for I will answer all of the letters that I get. You said you heard that Gov. Morton had called the 7th Ind. Regt. home to recruit. I had not heard anything of that, and if they go home, I will try / and get off, and come home too. I am sorry that my box did not get to Indianapolis. write to me in your next whether you got it or not. if you have not, I will try and get some pay for it. You said that the cherries were not ripe yet. just step over and I will give you your hat full of nice ripe ones. We have plenty of them. I am sorry to hear of that accident that occured, that of the cars running off the track. if there was killed with whom / I was acquainted, just write their names in your next. Well Sant Hagerstown beats all the towns that I ever saw, for young ladies. there are about three to every one man, although I have made but very few acquaintances yet. but if we remain here any length of time I expect to get acquainted with some pretty girl and have a good time generally. Give my love and respects to all the girls you see, and tell them I would like very much to see them all again.

I want to go to church tonight, and I must soon close. It is now time for tea. Please write as soon as this comes to hand and oblige. Your
Brother            W. H. Speer

Sandford Speer

Love & respects to all.
                        Good Night.
