William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 13 August 1862
Frederick City, Md. Aug. 13th '62
We are in very
good health. Still in Frederick. Will probably leave here tonight or sometime tomorrow. There is considerable excitement here about the late battle that Gen. Banks has had with the Rebels. It appears that our men got pretty badly cut up. But Gen. Pope has now recd reinforcements and is pursuing the fleeing Rebels. I hope he may be able to whip them out decently. It will probably be several days before you hear from us again. But as soon as we get settled down again, we will write to you.
I hope Father & John arrived home safe. They certainly had a very nice visit. I would liked very much to have gone home with them, but you know that it is impossible to get a furlough or a leave of absence.
Excuse this short note
You may expect to hear from us again before long. We will write as soon as convenient.
Good Bye
W. H. Speer
