William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 10 January 1863
Camp near Bell-Plain Va. Jan. 10th 1863
Dear Brother,
Your's of the 26th came to hand a few days since, and I will now try to answer it. Although I have nothing of much importance to write, yet I know that you will be glad to hear from me anyhow. I am at present enjoying very good health, and I hope that these few lines may find you and the rest of the friends in good health. It is now a raining, it has been a long time since it has rained at all. We are all glad to see it rain / but I expect we will get enough of it before it quits. We have not had any cold weather yet. It has been the pretiest winter that I ever saw. We are very well fixed for the winter we have very comfortable quarters, and are very willing to remain here all winter. We get plenty to eat &c and are tolerably well supplied with clothing.
Tell Father to send for those things at Frederick City Md. for we will never get them. Tell John T. Jones not to write us so many letters, it is very bothersome to read so many. Irve Myers the same.
Tom Gossett, Harry Brown and several others of the paroled prisoners have come back to the Company. Our Company is now a pretty good size.
Health of the Regt is very good at present. I have nothing more importance to write. Please write soon and tell me all the news. I would like very much to attend school with you, but away with such foolish talk What Regt. is Jake Barnhill in. So no more
