William H. Speer to Sandford Speer, 12 May 1863
Camp near Falmouth Va
May 12th 1863
Dear Brother,
Yours of the 23d came to hand a few days since, but I have not until now had time to write to you. You no doubt have read in the papers all about the "seven days battles on the Rappahannock" for I suppose the "papers" have published all concerning the same. A word or two in reference to it. Our Regiment was there (as usual) and we had a pretty hard time of it. We had to carry eight days rashions, and for three or four days it poured down rain, / which made it more disagreeable. Our Regiment crossed the river the first time about two miles below Fredericksburg, remaind there for two or three days dug entrenchments. Some three or four of our Regt wounded. we then crossed back over the river, and marched about fifteen miles, and crossed over the river again above Fredericksburg, to reinforce the right. But finily our whole force fell back on this side of the river where we are now. "Hookers" plans were defeated somehow.
A great number were wounded. We have now laid a pontoon bridge across / the river at Fredericksburg, and the ambulances have all gone over (under a flag of truce) for our wounded. They will be back tomorrow evening. Our Regiment has a very beautiful camping place. We have nice streets and on each side we have planted a row of shade trees (pine & cedar) which helps the appearance greatly. The boys are all in good health. Some say that we will move again soon, some say across the river, and others say towards washington. My opinion is that we will remain here for some time.
From where I am now writing, I can see the rebel camps & wagon trains &c. Our Pickets are on one bank of the Rappahannock and the Rebels on the other. Professer Lowe goes up in his balloon every day, watching the movements of the enemy. I used to think strange to see a balloon, but it has now become an every day sight. I have nothing more to write at present. Please write soon and give me all the news.
Your Brother
W H Speer
