Laura Mackenzie

Laura Mackenzie (maiden name: Owings) was born in Maryland around 1841 to William Lynch and Sophia North (née Moale) Owings. She lived most of her life in Baltimore, Maryland, and married Thomas Greer Mackenzie during the war on February 17, 1863, in Frederick, Maryland. Together they had a daughter: Theresa, born on December 11, 1864, in Alexandria, Virginia. Following her husband’s death from pneumonia at Kalorama Hospital on January 1, 1867, in Washington, D.C., she successfully applied for a pension and began receiving $20 a month on June 1, 1867. Mackenzie received back pay from the time of her husband’s death and obtained at least one pension increase before her death on September 16, 1895.
