Caroline Jane Summers (maiden name: Stuart) was born in New York in 1824. While onboard a ship to California with her sister, Margaret, and brother-in-law, Samuel Peter Heintzelman, she met John Edward Summers. The two were married on February 20, 1850, in her sister and brother-in-law's house in San Diego. They had three children: Caroline, born about 1856; John, born January 2, 1858; and Matilda, born February 24, 1859, who died young in 1862 in Alexandria, Virginia, of scarlet fever. The family lived in San Diego, California; Kearney, Nebraska Territory; Alexandria, Virginia; St. Paul, Minnesota; Saratoga, Nebraska; and Washington, D.C., between 1850 and 1900. Caroline Summers died on April 28, 1901, and is buried alongside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
