Detailed History
Prior to 1949, Isaac Lavett operated a clothing store out of 413 Michigan Avenue. The next owners were George E. and Ella L. Dennis, who ran the Tip Top Barbecue Restaurant. In June 1955, Ella Dennis (née Johnson) passed away; she had been the Grand District Deputy for Western New York and Canada of the Women's Auxiliary to the Independent Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World. The site is now a parking lot for the Durham Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.
