Description
The two-story three bay movie theatre stood on the north side of U Street. It was constructed of red brick with a limestone base. The lobby was defined by a glass front wall and glass doors. The second floor had five windows in the central bay, and the two towers on either side probably held stairs that were lighted by single windows on the front facade. A canted name sign was attached to the southeast corner of the building, which faced south.
Detailed History
The Booker-T Theatre stood at 1433 U Street NW. It opened in 1913 as the Olympic Theatre, renamed the Dudley Theatre in 1921, in 1928 it became the Bandbox, and in 1929, taken over by Litchman Theatres it became the Booker-T. The Green Book listing did not include the dash between Booker and “T.” It has been replaced by Portner Place Apartments that is a seven-story apartment building, with a restaurant called "Eatopia."
