Wilhelmina L. Boone lived on the fourth floor of the building at 96 Main Street with her husband Nathaniel and their two children. The family was part of the Great Migration, having left South Carolina for New London by the mid-1920s. City directories and censuses indicate that Wilhelmina ran her own hairdressing business from at least 1931 through 1948. She had been widowed in 1934, making this business all the more important for supporting the small family.
