Description
Canal Street, a short block between W. Strand Street and Ferry Street, has been redeveloped since the Gordon was listed in the Green Book. The 1950 Sanborn fire insurance map shows a restaurant with hotel rooms on the second and third floors at 3 Canal Street. Additional restaurants were at 5 and 7 Canal Street in 1950. The 1957 Sanborn Map shows a vacant lot at 3 Canal Street.
Detailed History
From a Facebook post via the Library at the A.J Williams-Meyers African Roots Center, the Gordon was owned by Warren and Emma Gordon during this time. Unfortunately, any further information on Warren and Emma Gordon or the Gordon Hotel in a census or other digitally available resources such as property records or advertisements has not been forthcoming.
