Detailed History
The correct name is Hawaiian Village. Constructed in 1928 as the Niumalu Hotel, in 1954 mainland developers began to expand the hotel with new buildings. Conrad Hilton purchased the hotel from Henry John Kaiser, an industrialist in 1961 and established the first of the Hilton Hotel's "luxury resort" hotels in Waikiki. The 1963/1964 and 1966/1967 listings in the Green Book are further evidence of the attitude changes among hoteliers who welcomed African Americans to their hotels.
