Description
The hotel is located at 455 S. Broadway, Tarrytown, NY, directly across from the on and off ramps for I-287/I-87 near the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and formerly the Tappan Zee Bridge. A postcard of the Hilton dating shortly after 1961 showed the hotel as a series of one- and two-story buildings around a courtyard featuring a pool for adults and another with a foundation for children. The buildings were clad in stone veneer and shingles and featured large windows. The roof line of one of the structures included multiple front-facing gables that overhung a covered walkway with direct access to hotel rooms inside. The main entrance included a covered drive-through with a similar roof design. Roof overhangs were supported by narrow white columns that may have been metal. Renovations have since been undertaken to update the property, which currently operates as the Sleepy Hollow Hotel. and Conference Center Instead of detached buildings, the various buildings that compose the hotel have been connected. The central courtyard with the inground-swimming pools and concrete deck has been replaced with grass, trees, and a cobblestone walkway, and an enclosed pool provides yearround access. The entrance to the building has been updated, as have several other public spaces. "Modern"-styled glass and metal elements have been downplayed with the addition of more rusticated wooden elements and stone pillars. The drive-through entrance has been extended into the parking lot and additional car parking has been added in the front, the back, and on both sides.
Detailed History
In 2011, Tarrytown's DoubleTree, formerly the Hilton Inn, celebrated its 50th anniversary (see: https://patch.com/new-york/tarrytown/thursday-marked-celebrations-for-the-50th-anniversaryee7288d838). Opened on December 1, 1961, the building was constructed as a stopping point for visitors attending the 1964-65 World Fair in New York City. This particular hotel helped pave the way for other hotels to be built in the area leading the hotel and tourism trade to become one of the "six recognized economic clusters" in Westchester County. After being renovated in 2007, the Hilton Inn became the DoubleTree by Hilton. The hotel underwent expansion as a conference center as the company sought to provide a meeting space to the ever-growing and diversifying business sector. It now operates as the Sleepy Hollow Hotel and Conference Center.
