Detailed History
An ad on page 102 of the 1962 Green Book indicates that the proprietor of this business was T.R. LaVar. Fairfield Foundation's "Hidden Civil Rights Landmarks in Rural Eastern Virginia: A Preliminary Study," submitted to Virginia Humanities in March, 2020 states the following: "We believe this business was located at 374 Urbanna Road near Saluda and that the building just north of it housed the G.L. Davis Service Station, Cafe, and Tavern. A gravel parking area sits between the businesses, both of which are abandoned, and the road. The building is a one-story concrete block structure with four bays, built in typical twentieth-century commercial style with a flat, metal roof hidden by a parapet. The northern two bays likely contained office space, while the southern bays are a garage. The G.L. Davis Service Station and Midway Auto Repair are registered in VCRIS as a single resource, 059-5424.
