Detailed History

According to Ron Stelck, who grew up in Motley, the camp was associated with the Free Methodist Church, located at the northeast corner of Birch St E and Cleveland Ave. He remembers it as a group of vacation cottages or cabins. The coordinates are for the location of Cabin #14, which remains extant. There is a large building to the west of the cabin that was likely part of the camp. The 1963 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map identifies it as a tabernacle. Today it is a barn. The church remains extant, but the Free Methodist Church is located in a newer building near the center of town. To the east of the church, the dining hall is also extant. Aerial photographs indicate that there were several cabins in this area. Ron recalls that there were about 8 to 10.
