Detailed History
The Mrs. E. McKinney tourist home, a rather large three and a half story residence located at 25 Pearl Street, was listed in The Green Book in 1938. At this time, the Pearl Street neighborhood was home to Waterbury's growing African American community and to three other tourist homes.
For African American travelers, finding accommodation in a Black neighborhood provided a sense of security, as well as convenience, as guests staying at the Mrs. E. McKinney tourist home would have been able to access other facilities such as the Pearl Street Neighborhood House and the AME Zion Church just a block north on Pearl Street (no longer extant and replaced by a modern church building now called the Mount Olive AME Zion Church). Today, the building is a multi-family home.
