The 1955 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map shows a two-story dwelling with a one-story rear porch at 2206 Marshall Ave. It has a front porch that extends around the corner of the house to cover part of the side/east elevation. The shape of this porch implies there is a a bay window on the side elevation. The main house has a composition roof; the porches have slate or tin roofs. This portion of the map is black and white, so the construction material is unknown.
This is now a vacant lot. The house to left in the photo is 2208 Marshall.

The 1950 census does not list anyone by this name in Newport News. The 1940 census has several listings with various spellings. James H. Taliaferro, also listed as James D. Talcoxotte, lives at 2206 Marshall Avenue. He is 69, Black, widowed, completed sixth grade, and owns his home. His household includes his daughter, Littian S. Moaer, age 34; her husband Datter N. Moaer, age 39; a cousin, Neston M. Talcoxotte, age 47; and two lodgers, William Hubbord, age 47, and Oldin Hubbord, age 18.
The fact that this was "Mrs. Taliaferro" and there is no Mrs. Taliaferro in 1940 could mean that the business started in 1938 as Mrs. Taliaferro and she passed away prior to the census. Or the family decided to name the listing Mrs. Taliaferro.
