Detailed History

Not listed in 1930 Hackley and Harrison's Guide for Colored Travelers. Records indicate that this 2-story Folk Victorian-style dwelling was occupied by Margaret Elizabeth Howland (1921-1994) and her husband Roy H. Howland (1918-1989). She was a white native of Brownsville, Tennessee. Roy and Margaret lived for a few years in Nashville before returning to his native Murfreesboro in the late-1940s or early 1950s. In Nashville, Roy worked for the railroad and Margaret operated the Elliston Place Beauty Shop. Our research shows it was owned by Elbert and Minnie Ester Howland, black residents.

Research shows that Mrs. M.E. Howland's tourist home was at the same location as Mrs. Fannie Hoover's tourist home. Mrs. Hoover's had the incorrect address of 429 E. State in the Green Book issues. Her business was listed in 1939, 1940, and 1941.
