The porch and main body of the house have slate or tin roofing, and the rear one-story portion has composition shingle. This section of the map is in black and white, so the material of the house is unknown.
The site is now a vacant lot and/or the playground for Marshall Elementary School.
Detailed History
The 1940 census lists William E. and Lillian Barron living at 818 22nd Street in Newport News. They are Black and have a daughter and a lodger in their household. Mr. Barron was born in Alabama and Mrs. Barron was born in Georgia. Their daughter Gladys was born in Virginia. This is obviously a different address from the Green Book listing, but these are the only Barrons in Newport News in 1940, and this particular census taker had poor handwriting. It's possible that the census address actually does match the Green Book address. In the 1950 census William Barron is the proprietor of a restaurant. Perhaps Mrs. W. E. Barron's listing is actually for a restaurant at a different address.
