Detailed History

Listed in The Green Book for almost the entire run of the publication, Nellie Tutt’s was a West Side institution. Incorrectly listed as “Nellie Fritts” from 1939 through 1941, the restaurant was listed as “Nellie Tutt’s” from 1946 through 1967.

The restaurant was operated by Mrs. Nellie Kendrick. According to her obituary, she was born in Calvert County, Maryland and lived in Asbury Park for 53 years, until her death at 83 in 1977. Her husband, Mr. Robert C. Kendrick, was also known as the owner and operator of the establishment. His obituary stated that he was a veteran of World War I.
