The S & L Grill was located in a two-and-a-half-story building on the northwest corner of E. Utica Street and Verplanck Street. The building’s main entrance is on Verplanck Street.

Detailed History

264 E. Utica Street was known as LaTouraine Hall in the early 20th century. Between 1917 and 1920, the name of the hall was changed to Crescent Hall. The hall was home to various community gatherings, from church meetings to rummage sales to graduation ceremonies. The S&L Grill opened on the E. Utica Street side of the building around 1956, replacing the Schultze Sadie Restaurant that had occupied the space since the 1930s. It was operated by Bert R. Swart. The S&L grill closed in the mid-1960s, and the Greater Hope Baptist Church has occupied the full building since. Swart was also proprietor of the Silver Eagle Grill at 1264 Jefferson Ave, and Club S & L at 1332 Jefferson Avenue. Club S & L may have been the new location of the S & L Grill after the closure of the E. Utica Street address.
