The image depicts the T.E. Scales Service Station on U.S. Highway 31A/41A in Kirkland. The filling station and store of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Scales circa 1938. At the time the photo was taken, Mr. Scales had been a distributor for Standard Oil for 51 years. The station was located north of the split of US 31A AND 41A. Thomas Ellis Scales, Jr. (1897-1971) was the son of Thomas Ellis Scales, Sr. (1867-1943). Both were Black rural general store owners on US 41A.
