Detailed History
Traveler's Hotel was adjacent to c.1905 Savoy Apartments (SY.07993) at 355 South 4th Street. The Traveler's Hotel was where MLK's chauffer Solomon Jones lived the day of MLK's assassination and is mentioned in James Earl Ray's court records; the hotel held local auditions for black actors in the 1920s; and in 1952 the hotel was selected as headquarters of the Negro Division of the McKellar for Senator Committee, operated under the direction of Prof. Blair T. Hunt, chairman, assisted by Walter Pamphlet and Doris Johnson, secretary. Advertisement with exterior photo in Grayson's Guide (YEAR).
