Description

Surviving historical photographs depicting the site in the 1960s are slim to none; however, the overall structure of the Treadway Inn still stands today. It is currently named the LaGuardia Hotel and is part of the Holiday Inn hotel chain. Nestled on the intersection of 37th Avenue and 114th Street in Corona, Queens, NY, the eight story, rectangular shaped building is clad in gray brick structure with red-painted brick stripes down the sides of the building. On the long sides of the building (the side that faces out onto 37th Avenue and the rear of the building) there are two red-painted brick stripes that divide the building into thirds. On the ends, there is only one stripe, dividing the area in half. The ends of the building feature two vertical columns of seven windows, while the long sides feature seven rows of sixteen windows, staggered in layout. All windows have noticeable curtains equipped to be open or closed. The site has two entrances, one on the side of the building that faces out onto 114th Street and the other on the backside of the building near the adjacent two-level parking garage. The entrance facing 114th Street is equipped with two sets of stairs, as well as a wheelchair accessible ramp on the north corner that all meet under a projecting entry cover. The entrance itself has a set of automatic doors with large glass windows on either side that offer a view into the lobby space. Amenities inside include an Italian-American cuisine restaurant, comfortable lobby seating, and a swimming pool/fitness center.

Detailed History

Sources discussing the history of the building itself are scarce but the area in which this structure resides has a rich history. In the 1960s, Queens, NY was experiencing a post-war population boom, with families moving to the borough for its suburban lifestyle, leading to the development of garden apartments and single-family homes in various areas. Additionally, the completion of major roadways such as the Long Island Expressway and Grand Central Parkway facilitated easier access to and from the borough. The area features some notable attractions as well, which welcomed visitors from all over New York State and beyond. Attractions include Flushing Meadows Park, home to the New York Mets baseball team and the US Open tennis tournament, Kaufman Astoria Studios, Silvercup Studios, and the Aqueduct Racetrack. Lastly, this site was listed in the Green Book in 1963, 1964, and 1966. At this time, the World’s Fair was taking place in Flushing, Queens. It showcased many scientific and technological advancements, another reason why people would have traveled and stayed in the area and in a location such as the Treadway Inn.
