The White House was listed as a restaurant in the Green Book in 1939 and 1940. However, outside of the publications, there is no evidence the business existed. Neither Sanborn Fire Insurance maps nor city directories for the city of Rutland include 50 W. Washington Street, let alone a restaurant at that address. Newspapers refer to at least three restaurants called “White House” across the state of Vermont, but some of these were not operating in 1939 and 1940 and none of them were located on a Washington Street in Rutland.
