Detailed History
The 1966 Green Book issue lists Mrs. A.D. Henderson's Tourist Home at 320 Nelson Street in Bristol, TN. However, this address is actually in Bristol, VA. In earlier Green Book issues, Mrs. Henderson's Tourist Home was at 301 McDowell Street, in Bristol, TN. The 1966 listing is the only one with her new address in Bristol, VA.
Arthur Dalman Henderson (born Oct 23, 1885; died June 8, 1959) was a black janitor and waiter who was married to Trula S. Pace (1889-1939), a music teacher. According to the 1920 census, Arthur briefly worked as and insurance agent, and he and Trula had a nearly four-year old daughter. He was the only son of John L. and Emma Leftrich Henderson, who moved from Virginia to Tennessee at some point before 1910. Arthur worked as a waiter at the General Shelby Hotel from at least 1910 - 1938. The family lived at 301 McDowell since at least 1920. In 1917 - 1918 they lived at 224 McDowell Street. According to the 1940 census, Arthur worked as a waiter and lived at 301 McDowell with his 22-year old daugher, Inez, who was a music teacher and briefly the cafeteria cook at Bristol High School. The 1940 census indicates that Inez had four years of college education and Arthur had two years of high school. Arthur remarried in 1941 to Julia Underwood Graves, who had a son Timothy who was in his mid-20s. Timothy worked as a brick mason and Julia worked as a cook in a restaurant. Per the 1950 census, the three were living together at 301 McDowell. When Arthur died in 1959, he and Julia still lived at 301 McDowell. Presumably Julia took over the tourist home after Arthur died, as it continued to be listed in the Green Book.
