Description

Detailed History
John C. Davis, a white businessman, opened the resort in 1933. The African American newspaper, The Norfolk Journal and Guide, covered the 1933 opening: “The informal opening, on May 30, will make history for Norfolk as this will be the first time that Negroes will have had a local beach worthy of note.” Norfolk Southern Bus Co ran a line from downtown, charging riders 35 cents.
