Detailed History

Unlike the phantom Mrs. L. Jackson (35 Bath Rd), Mrs. F. Jackson was a real person. Robert and Florence Jackson purchased 28 Hall Ave. in 1924. According to both the Directories and the Census, they shared the house with another couple. The Jacksons lived on the second floor while Louis C. Suggo, a laborer at the Naval War College, and his wife (the 1939 Directory lists her name as Margaret, the 1940 Census names her Beatrice), lived on the first floor.

The Jacksons and the Suggos represent two different generations of families. According to the 1940 Census, Robert Jackson was born in Virginia in 1890 and Florence was born in Maryland in 1891 (they were 50 and 49 years old respectively). Louis and Margaret/Beatrice were born in RI in 1915 and 1916 respectively and thus were a generation younger. The Jacksons were part of the Great Migration, while the Suggos were native Rhode Islanders. Of the four, only Louis worked outside the home (Robert was listed as “unable to work” on the Census) and only Margaret/Beatrice had received an education beyond 8th grade (she completed high school).

The F. Jackson Tourist Home was listed in The Green Book from 1939 through 1963/64 and as such, it is the longest listing in Newport. When the Jacksons passed away in 1947, the property descended to their daughter, Jane, who was a widow. Jane continued to list in The Green Book for its remaining years, occupying her parents' rooms on the second story.
