Two-story frame house with basement and attic space. Wooden siding on first floor what may be asbestos tile siding on the second. Pyramidal roofline with cross gable on front. Basement is laid in concrete blocks. Covered porch over front door and most of front side of house.
Detailed History
Home of married couple Irving Ward Herald (1879-1977 from Alleghany County, NY) and Anna W. Herald (1882-1956, originally from North Dakota), who were married in Jamestown, New York on March 9, 1908. I.W. Herald was a barber who owned his own shop in Jamestown while Anna was listed consistently as working as a homemaker, suggesting she ran the boarding house business for extra income throughout her adult life. Irving was drafted at age 39 for military duty in World War One, but it is unclear if he was ever sent to training or saw action. From the 1920 Census on, different residents are listed as "lodgers" in their home at 51 W. 10th Street with occupations such as a orchestra musician, butler, housekeeper, and hotel cook. Lodgers were listed in each census through 1950 while Irving also maintained his own business with the barbershop during this time. Listed every year of the Green Book, it is likely Irving continued hosting travelers after Anna's death in 1956 per Social Security records.
