Known Name(s)

New Cameo

Address

108 Northern Blvd Corona, NY

Description

New Cameo’s address according to the Green Book entry makes the location of the property unclear at this time. Northern Boulevard runs from 21st Street and Jackson Avenue at the Midtown Tunnel to Nassau. The 108 address should be near the intersection with 108th Street. However, without the second part of the hyphenated street number, it is not currently possible to know which building would have housed New Cameo.

Detailed History

As described in its 1954 Green Book entry, New Cameo was a night club. It was a Green Book location from 1947 to ’54. While there is limited information available about New Cameo as a night club, the Brooklyn NY Daily Star references the location in 1927. The article describes a druggist by the name of Samuel H. Shagaloff who lost his liquor license when he failed to file his monthly reports and violated the Volstead Act. Counterfeit liquor prescriptions were also found in his records.

According to the non-profit Historic Districts Council, during the location’s time as a Green Book site, the Corona area was a hub for many African American cultural figures and Civil Rights activists. (https://hdc.org/borough/corona/)
