Sam Hall, b. 1888, Virginia, was a resident of Long Branch and a Black man-about-town whose frequent appearance in the local newspaper, The Daily Record, suggests that he had a numbers running racket operating from 180 Belmont. (The Daily Record, 30 October 1933). He was also a favorite "Colored Championship" pool tournament player in the 1930s.(Daily Record 14 December 1933, p. 15). He also sold reconditioned cars from the 180 Belmont address, which may have combined the tavern and his home. (Daily Record, 21 June 1947, want ads). He died in 1954. His wife, Gladys, was White; the two of them are noted in the local paper as attending social functions and theatrical performances together.
