Helen C. Perry to Sarah A. Jones, 2 November 1864
Hunter Nov. 2nd 64.
Dear Sarah
After waiting all this long time I have at last found just the opportunity of writing to you. What do you think I am about to do. well you can't guess. it is this. I am going to Catskill to teach school expect to start this afternoon or to-morrow morning with your Uncle Frank he is going down after George and his mother. you must not expect much of a letter from me this time for I can't think of anything my school commences next monday, there are about 40 schollars or somewhere near / it. it was a very unexpected thing for me I assure you as I intended to go to the select school here this winter but I went down to C. to get some things and my cousin asked me if I would take the school and I told her yes and she said I could just as well have it as not and in about an hour the bargain was complete. are you coming to Hunter this winter you know you talked of it but I suppose not as you attend school there I hear they like Mr Miller very much. I shant see our next teacher but I would like to very much but I suppose the girls will half eat him up just as they do everybody else. I attended J. H. Burtis' wedding party last week / it was very pleasant but I have not time to write about it now. we hear from Will often he seems to like it though he has been sick, but is better now Saunders is sick all the time and if the hospitals were not full he would go to one. Vol Smith was taken prisoner by a band of guerrillas about the 5th of Oct. and has not been heard of since several of those who were taken with him was killed and he might have been one of them. Florence is here and has made a visit at our house I will send this by her if not Grandma will send it by mail give my love to all enquiring friends and when you write direct to Catskill the same as Hunter
Good bye aff'ly H. C. Perry
