George B. Goodrich was born on June 11, 1845, in Hunter, New York, to Francis and Asenath Goodrich. His father was a farmer and chair manufacturer. He grew up and attended school in Hunter, and by the early 1860s, he was working as a mechanic.
He enlisted in the Union army on March 7, 1864, and he mustered in as a private in Company E of the 15th New York Engineers. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with dark hair and blue eyes. The regiment took part in the siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox campaign. He mustered out on June 13, 1865.
He returned to Hunter after the war, and he married a woman named Julia around 1866. They had at least five children: Martha, born around 1867; Clara, born around 1869; Daisy, born around 1873; Edwin, born around 1880; and Julia, born around 1887. He worked as a farmer, and by 1870, he owned $1,100 of real estate and $626 of personal property. By 1880, he was working as a chair manufacturer. He applied for a federal pension in June 1880 and eventually received one. He and his wife may have separated in the early 1900s. By 1910, he was living with his mother in Hunter. He died in Kingston, New York, on July 6, 1928.
