Centerville June 18 1863
Dear Sister
Having a little spare time I thought I would write home and let you know whare we are we left Falmouth the 12th and reached this place last night we do not know how long we shall stay here but probbily not long I suppose we are waiting for orders there is rhumors that we are going our Corps is going to stay around here in the defense of Washington and I almost believe it for the rest of the Army has gone on I suppose towards Pensylvany I am glad that the Rebbel Army is marching north it is just the place we want them if our Generals do what they ought to do the Rebbel Army / will be ruined it cannot be otherways it all deppends in on good Generalship on our side and I hope they will show it now a great many believe that it is their last dash if we [?] at Vicksburgh and whip them here it will be about the last fighting that will be done
Cannonnading was this morning up towards Leesburg about two hundred rebbel prisoners went through here yesterday we had a heavy thunder shower here last night and I was glad to see it come for it has been very dry here for some time and water was geting very scarce we could not hardly get enough to drink while on the march it was verry hot and we drank a great deal we stoped at Bulls Run about four / days hours and had a good bath in the creek June 22
June 22. Gum Springs
I guess I will finish my letter now we started from Centerville the 18th and reached this place the same day distance past twelve miles and it was the easyest march we ever marched our Regt and the 5 Excelsior guarded the waggons and we had our knapsacks carried it would be quite a sight for you to see such a large waggon train it was as long as from the Heights to Charles Kirks and I dont know but longer their are a great manny Gurilies around here or their was when we came here we have taken a great manny within two or three days Cannonnading was heard all / day yesterday it is supposed it was as was a Cavalry fight we have not heard the particulars yet their is no other force around here except our Corps we do not know whare the rest of the Army is well I must close for we are going to have Evening Parade in a little while I received a letter from home last night it was the first mail that has come through since we left Falmouth I will send Uncle Georges likeness back next time I wiste I also received a paper with some paper and envelopes in it I received a letter with 2 dollars in it before we left falmouth and do not need it I will send it back again as soon as I think it will be safe to send it by mail I am not going to send home any money this time for I have been buying a watch I sent some money by Ebb Hall to get Charly some letters I suppose that he is home by this time I will write again in day or two if we dont move
