Camp Jackson
Williamsport Md Jany 15th/61
Dear Mother
I received your letter this AM, and will answer it to my best ability. I am well, and hope that you are the same. I have not received fathers letter as yet, but hope to get it soon I believe that the news is correct that you sent in the letter
Probably that Jackson has retreated to about twelve miles beyond Bath, and is encamped on a level plain in that vicinity, at least the inhabitants say so. I guess that Fred will feel a little sea sick before he sees land again. I would like to go and with him first rate. / If Father goes on board to see him before he starts, give him my best respects.
You had better give him something to read on his voyage. If I had known in season I could have come home, and seen him before he went. I will write him a letter, and you will please foward it to him as soon as you get it.
We are probably here for the winter now, and after we build barracks I will write you all about the place, and how our camp looks.
We expect the Pay Master here now every day. We shall get two months pay. How does Henry get along in school now. I expect that Capt Cary will go home next week sometime and he said that he would see father. I would like first rate to have father subscribe for the True Flag or some / such paper, and send it out to me, as I should have something story to read right along. We have got our tent fixed up so that it is quite comfortable and we do not suffer from the cold any. There is no news here now of any importance. I will write you again soon and tell you what our prospects are for the winter.
Give my love to Aunt Kate, and Uncle Henry. With love to Ada Henry and father I remain your affectionate
son Chas. E. Leland
