Martha C. Leland (maiden name: Leland) was born on February 28, 1820, in Hubbardston, Massachusetts, to Lowell and Betsy Leland. She married Charles Messinger Leland on September 2, 1843, and they had at least four children: Charles, born around 1844; Ida, born around 1849; Henry, born around 1850; and Ada, born around 1858. They lived in Walpole, Massachusetts, and her husband worked as a book maker. They moved to Chelsea, Massachusetts, in the 1850s and then to Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1860s. By 1870, they owned $8,000 of real estate and $700 of personal property. They moved to Melrose, Massachusetts, in the 1870s. Her husband died on March 27, 1893, and she died of “old age and exhaustion” in Walpole, Massachusetts, on July 22, 1901.
